How We Took a Raw Memoir From Draft to Bookshop

Every book begins as an act of courage. Rhiannon's 93,000-word document arrived in our inbox with a note that read: "I don't know if this is any good, but I need to tell this story." What followed was a structured, transparent collaboration that turned uncertainty into a published memoir — and a second career for its author.

Phase 1 — Manuscript Diagnostic

We performed a 14-page structural assessment. The narrative arc was strong but buried under chronological repetition. We identified three pivotal scenes that needed to anchor the book and recommended cutting roughly 18,000 words of redundant backstory.

"The diagnostic alone was worth every penny. It gave me a map I never had." — Rhiannon T.

Phase 2 — Developmental Editing

Over six weeks, we restructured the manuscript into a non-linear narrative. Chapters were reordered, voice inconsistencies resolved, and a new opening was crafted from a scene originally buried on page 214. The word count settled at 74,500.

Phase 3 — Line Editing & Proofread

Two separate passes: one for rhythm and sentence-level craft, one for mechanical accuracy. We flagged 42 factual claims for the author to verify and corrected dialect inconsistencies across Welsh-English dialogue.

Phase 4 — Publishing Strategy

Rather than pursuing a London agent, we identified three independent Welsh publishers whose catalogues aligned with the memoir's themes. We prepared a submission package — synopsis, sample chapters, author bio, and comparative titles — tailored to each imprint.

"They didn't just edit my book. They understood the market it belonged in." — Rhiannon T.

Phase 5 — Production Support

After acceptance by the publisher, we continued as the author's advocate through cover consultation, blurb writing, metadata optimisation, and pre-launch review outreach. The book launched at a Cardiff literary event attended by 130 people.

"The distance between a finished draft and a published book is not talent — it's process."

Founding Editor & Publishing Strategist

Fifteen years in London trade publishing before returning to Wales. Former commissioning editor at two major imprints. Gwyneth has guided over sixty manuscripts to publication — literary fiction, memoir, narrative non-fiction, and specialist non-fiction.

"I started BookTalentPro because too many brilliant manuscripts stall at the 80% mark. Authors don't need cheerleaders. They need someone who understands the entire pipeline from draft to distribution."

Three Publishing Routes — Choose Yours

ROUTE A Traditional Publishing via Agent

We prepare your submission package and target literary agents whose client lists match your genre and voice. This route suits authors willing to invest 6–18 months in the submission cycle for the potential of an advance, wider distribution, and publisher-led marketing.

Best fit: literary fiction, memoir, narrative non-fiction with broad appeal

ROUTE B Direct-to-Publisher (Independent Presses)

Many independent and regional publishers accept unagented submissions. We identify the right imprints, prepare tailored pitches, and manage the submission calendar. Faster decisions, smaller advances, but often more editorial involvement and author-friendly contracts.

Best fit: regional stories, niche non-fiction, poetry, Welsh-interest titles

ROUTE C Guided Self-Publishing

Full editorial and production support with you retaining all rights and royalties. We coordinate cover design, typesetting, ISBN registration, distributor setup (Ingram, Amazon KDP), and launch strategy. You own everything; we ensure it's professional.

Best fit: specialist non-fiction, business books, authors with existing audiences
